Chipping your lopped trees is a great way to upcycle your own trees once they have been lopped! Why not, otherwise, it’s just wasted or used in someone else’s garden.
A by-product of the timber industry, wood chips are readily available in Brisbane. Many of our mature trees, because of their usually large size and freedom from weeds and pesticides, make good mulch. However, if you get them from a local tree feller, they contain quite a mixture of sizes. It is best to ask your tree services business if they can supply the chip in a fairly consistent size. We, at T and M Tree Services can do this for you, while we are visiting your property at the time of performing the tree lopping or trimming service.
The wood chips, while advantageous for assisting to trap moisture in your garden, do use nitrogen from the soil as they break down. This problem can be overcome by dispersing some organic nitrogen-containing fertiliser on the ground before spreading the wood chip. Native plants with low nutrient requirements are perfect for having the wood chips placed around them.
